Fence Allowed on Jeter’s Mansion

| No CommentThe ongoing debate over a fence New York Yankees star Derek Jeter plans to build at his
Davis Islands home appears to be over.
A Tampa variance review board voted 7-0 Tuesday night to allow a six-foot privacy fence to be built around the 31,000-square foot home (the county’s biggest, by the way) rising on the island. City code normally allows only for a 3-foot solid wall and a 4-foot “barrier” on street front lots.
A spokesman for the Yankees’ shortstop said the higher fence is needed for security reasons.
Neighbor David Lurie agreed with the ruling.
“I firsthand witness people driving up in a taxi cab, get out with Jeter baseball shirt, Yankee shirts, take pictures in front of his house,’ Lurie said. “And people are doing that with a home that’s not even finished being built yet.”
Other neighbors on Bahama Circle said they understand the need for privacy but fear the large fence will be an eyeshore.
“It’s already a wall. We call it the great wall of Jeter,’ said Taylor Ward. “It is gigantic and if you haven’t experienced it viscerally. I don’t think you can understand what it’s doing to the feeling of our street.”
Members of the variance board said in addition to security, the fence is needed to hide the home’s large electrical equipment.
Plans call for the fence to be part concrete and part wrought iron.
When completed, the waterfront home will have seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
