Tampa, Florida — Government salaries make up a huge expense that taxpayers have to cover. As budgets are getting tighter, we decided to look at what some of the top employees are earning.
Our first stop was in Hillsborough County, which has more than 300 public employees making more than $100,000 a year.
The top five include Hillsborough Aviation Authority Director Louis Miller. Miller is the highest earning county employee, making around $253,302.
It’s good to work at the airport, where 39 aviation authority employees make more than $100,000.
The Port is a good place to work as well. Port Director Richard Wainioat has the second highest paycheck in the county at $245,003. Wainio is followed by The County Medical Examiner, Vern Adams, at $244, 899, County Administrator Pat Bean at $221,395 and County Attorney Alice Renee Lee at $210,142.
In Pinellas, 120 people earn more than $100,000 a year. The highest paid Pinellas employee is County Administrator Robert LaSala. LaSala tops the list at $225,000.
Polk County Administrator Mike Herr makes $185,343. Herr is the top paid official in Polk County, where there are 17 employees whose salary tops $100,000.
In Pasco County, Manager John Gallagher pulls down $180,000. Twenty Pasco County workers make six figures.
If you looking for a high paying city or county job, you might think about applying at Lakeland City Hall. The city of about 100,000 people has more six figure public workers than the cities of St. Petersburg, Largo, Clearwater and Plant City combined. However, the city says there is a logical explanation for that. City Spokesman Kevin Cook says the high salaries are a result of the fact that Lakeland owns the utility company. Cook says many of the high salaries go to the big guys at Lakeland Electric.
Other city salaries include St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, who makes $162,314. Baker is the highest paid of the 19 six-figure public employees in St. Pete.
In Tampa, Mayor Pam Iorio pulls down just under $150,000, but doesn’t come close to the top of the 114 six-figure employees. That honor goes to Finance Director Bonnie Wise at $160,659.
Aviation Director Louis Miller and his wife, Cynthia, who is Tampa’s Director of Growth Management, make a combined $395,000. Meanwhile, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and her husband Mark Woodard, the assistant county administrator in Pinellas, make a combined $325,000 a year.
